We’ve been writing about many stunning light installations Submergence, Winter Illumination, and Water Light Graffiti are just a few examples), but none of them had the scale, or the visibility of Bay Lights. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, famous artist Leo Villareal has been commissioned to design the world's largest light sculpture to cover the bridge's western span (1,8 miles wide and 500 feet high). Taking inspiration from nature's connectivity and impermanence, the monumental installation uses 25,000 LEDs individually programmed so that the complex light patterns never repeat. The dazzling sculpture had its grand lightning ceremony on the 5th of March, and it will be on display every night from dusk to midnight through 2015. In order to stay up and running for two years, the Bay Lights Project is still seeking about $2 million in private funding of the $8 million required.
