Bags That Talk
Archaic phones get a high fashion makeover as part of Sean Miles and O2 latest collaboration
There’s certainly an appeal to vintage fashions, but what about vintage technology? The last instalment in the Recycle collection by UK-based designer Sean Miles and O2, Bags That Talk integrates old mobile phones into high fashion designer handbags resulting in, as the name implies, bags that talk.
O2 customers donated old LG and Nokia handsets which Miles integrated into a vintage Celine small box handbag, a Chloe Marcie mini leather shoulder bag, and an Alexander McQueen De Manta animal print clutch bag, among others. Despite being archaic bits of technology, the phones are fully functional.
Previous instalments of the Recycle collection included Walkie Talkies, old mobile phones integrated into shoes, and Talk to the Hand, designer gloves with phone components in the thumb and forefinger. Miles stated that, “While these fun innovations may not be to everyone’s tastes it shows what you can do with recycling mobiles; there are hundreds of other uses that old phones can be put to—from being reconditioned and used again to being mined for their components.”
Perhaps there isn’t high demand for a Mulberry messenger with a built-in Ghetto Blaster, however, Bags That Talk highlights the real possibilities of recycling in a way that is both innovative and eco-friendly, and presents the issue in a slightly different way than previous tech-waste solutions we've looked, like PhoneBloks for example.
