Instead of transmitting the wilds of the street, Canadian rapper Baba Brinkman provides us with a lesson in human origin in his acclaimed Rap Guide to Evolution. Written with the aid of leading scientists, Brinkman performs his hip-hop fuelled low-down into the history of species following the success of his former educational project, The Rap Canterbury Tales. If you're not already familiar with the Canadian rapper, check out this talk he did for TED What makes Brinkman’s work interesting is his unusual, but not so unusual, way of breaking out of the materials dry and inaccessible nature – reworking the text to communicate a contemporary transcription of Darwin’s theory to a completely new and younger audience. And it’s worked, leading Brinkman recognition receiving a Scotsman Fringe First Award after performing at Edinburgh Fringe back in 2009. Brinkman will be spittin’ the theory of origin at Covent Garden’s Prince Charles Theatre this week, alongside screening previews of specially produced videos documenting the show and hosting an introduction and Q+A session exploring the background to the project. You can listen to the Rap Guide to Evolution here and find out more about the project from Baba himself here.
