Earlier in the month, we reported on Audi's collaboration with Chris Cunningham to mark the opening of their new showroom - cum - 'cyberstore' in London's Mayfair.

And now we can reveal that Cunnigham's production will be shown in store over five dates at the end of July in what is to be the first in a series of multimedia works involving performance, sound, robotics and sculpture as commissioned by the car giant.

Audi City is a fascinating concept that attempts to create space in the increasingly dense urban environment. By bridging the gap between real and virtual space through showcasing cyber models, and allowing the customer to interact with, learn about and customise their own car, they cleverly obviate the need for overly capcacious showrooms.  Even the different engine sounds and noises made by various styles of doors have been digitalised to complete the expereince. Instead of driving away with a brand new motor, customers configure their own vehicle, save it on a usb and take it to a dealership....presumably a rural one.

It's great to see Audi join Smart Car in addressing, and adpating to the issue of urban space and the changing nature of the modern metropolis as well as introducing a new retail model that does away the traditional 'hard sell' techniques.
