The modern correspondence is often an unimaginative affair. Texts and emails are convenient but they lack the romance and mystique of the letter. The only letters most of us get these days bear bad, money-related, news.

Attachment is a new project by Swiss Designer David Colombini that lets you send a message via biodegradable balloon. Providing you haven’t got a specific recipient in mind, this method of delivery offers a modern yet poetic way of communicating. To take part in the project, users upload a message with the option of attaching an image or video which is then printed by the ‘Poetic Machine’ located in Renens in Switzerland. The message is then placed inside a biopolymer cylinder, attached to a helium balloon and released. The balloon will then travel haphazardly to a potential recipient who, on receipt of the code, can connect to the website to retrieve the full message. Replying is optional.

“The basic idea was to take a stand against the current use of smart technology by creating a poetic concept, using current technology that allows us to communicate differently and rediscover expectation, the random and the unexpected”, says Colombini on his website. It's interesting to see a physical manifestation of a digital idea, (in this case, the email attachment), and is a good example of the blurring of our digital/physical worlds.
