New, thoughtful, beautifully designed publications are always nice to see, but we're especially impressed with the ones that manage to take a relatively niche subject, and, through elegant design and interesting articles, widen its appeal far beyond its initial demographic. From things like Nous Magazine, an artful, design-led publication looking at mental health, to Flaneur, that picks a single street somewhere in the world as its subject for each issue, niche magazines are definitely undergoing a stylish makeover.

Acid Magazine explores all manner of subjects; philosophy, science, art and travel, but through the lens of surfing. Filled with gorgeous photography of surfing from around the world, Acid is not just for the surfing aficionados, it appeals to anyone with an eye for tasteful, unusual design. Taking the kind of laid back approach you'd expect from surfers, the magazine's published every six to ten months.
