The Pilcrow is a new roaming pub invested in Manchester's craft scene
A new 20-acre redevelopment in Manchester, named NOMA, needs a pub. And a new venture will ensure that it has one. Built for the residents, by the residents and set to move around the neighbourhood, the creators behind the Pilcrow hope to reignite a love of dying craft techniques by enlisting volunteers to attend free workshops and then apply those skills to the building.

Devised by Ben Young of Capital Properties, the pub is set to open in autumn of 2016, and will serve locally produced food and craft beers. The workshops will be led by local craftspeople who will produce every aspect of the pub right down to the glasses, and the completed project will include space for further learning and workshops. On top of this the temporary structure will move around the neighbourhood, making it accessible to all of the community.

The pub is named after the pilcrow, a typographical character that marks the change between paragraphs, popular in the middle ages to designate a new train of thought – and it’s also the pub’s new logo, designed by Studio DBD. We've seen traditional craft re-emerge in a variety of unconventional ways, such as Micro Urban Mining's repurposing of e-waste and MIT's reinvention of ancient glass-blowing as 3D printing.
