A huge amount of noise has been made about 3D printing over the past few years. The manufacturing technique, which lets people create three-dimensional objects in a matter of hours, is transforming how we make things. It is revolutionising manufacturing – did you know, for instance, that over 10m hearing aids around the world have been made using the process? It has also helped designers the world over instantly mock-up workable prototypes.

It’s certainly changed industry, but what about your average consumer? Well, things are about to get even more exciting. With the cost of 3D printers plummeting and the number of online resources with 3D-printable blueprints growing (see: Thingiverse), the technology is now within the reach of anyone with a computer. Soon every home study will be turned into a mini-desktop factory.

In fact, that time is already upon us. This October, the world’s first trade and consumer show dedicated to 3D printing technology is launching. The 3D Printshow, which opens on the 19th Oct and runs until the 21st, will feature a series of live demonstrations, workshops and seminars, and will offer consumers a chance to get to grips with the technology for the first time.

There’ll be live music, high fashion, art, science and archaeology – featuring clothes, products, even musical instruments, that have been produced using 3D printing techniques.

Highlights include the world's first fully 3D printed band, a 3D art gallery, a full-body scanner that can create a miniature version of your body, and a design bar that will let visitors get on-hand expert advice about how to personalise products they already own.

Running at The Brewery, Chiswell Street, East London from 19th-21st October, it’s set to be a fascinating event. Protein will be running a forum during the show as well, so stay tuned for more info on that coming soon.
